How easy is it to visit your home for an aging parent or someone with special needs? If your home is like most – the answers is not easy at all! The cool thing is with some planning and thoughtful bathroom design you can have a stylish space which is safe and functional for everyone.
A special home has been developed in Columbus Ohio (called the Universal Design Living Laboratory) which shows how to make your home cool to look at, functional and safe for people of all ages and abilities. This article focuses on key features (and benefits) of a universal and accessible guest bathroom.

Small accessible roll in shower
For someone in a wheelchair showering or bathing can be a huge challenge (and in some cases an activity to be avoided given the physical strain of the task) – unless the bathroom and shower has been designed to accommodate their needs. Designing a handicap accessible bathroom requires a mix of careful planning, thoughtful design, selecting the best products and choosing a contractor with the right expertise.
In Part 1 of this series the focus will be on the step to design the entry to the bathroom and selecting the best shower base.

Handicapped Accessible Roll in Shower with Curved Glass Block Wall in Process Before Great Big Home & Garden Show
If you’ve got a family member with mobility challenges or special needs you know your existing bathtub or shower enclosure can be a difficult and dangerous place to maneuver. Stepping over a bathtub rail or shower curb can be an accident waiting to happen. Slippery floor surfaces and hard to reach shampoo and soap niches can be a cause for concern – especially if there are no grab bars or stable wall to grab on to.
Creating a universal design shower (one that can be used by people of all ages or abilities) or an ADA shower that looks luxurious yet is functional requires the thoughtful selection of products and construction expertise. Glass block curved shower wall for an accessible design
When Cleveland Design & Remodeling division was approached by Bob Armstrong of Master Stone Crafters to create a shower out of an existing walk in closet the project had a familiar theme to it. Bob’s potential customer was not only looking to update an existing cramped bathroom (which currently had a tub/shower combo with a larger walk in closet) but they wanted to make it cool looking and safe for elderly family members who visit their home. Some of the requirements the customer had for this project included:
- Creating a large walk in shower (up to 6 foot by 8 foot) that could be used from a seated (roll in shower) or standing position.
- Finding a way to create storage in the bathroom for clothing that could not be stored in the walk closet anymore.
- Have a sleek contemporary look that was also safe for their visitors.
- Make the shower as maintenance free and waterproof as possible.
- Add updated shower features to make a more relaxing showering experience.

Decorative glass block window in universal design
Seldom does a new home building project come along that can inspire, educate and liberate any person’s ability to use and enjoy the home than the Universal Design Living Laboratory (UDLL) being built by Rosemarie Rossetti and her husband Mark Leder. Several months ago (see the related blog post below) I focused on one feature in this home (the glass block windows and glass mural window used in the master bathroom). In this post let’s look at some features in the master bathroom to see thoughtful universal design and green building practices in action (Please note – this home – which is being built in Columbus Ohio – will be open for public touring later this year or early next year).
